The Rise Of The Animation Industry In South Africa

For decades, animation has been associated with Western countries (particularly America) who have an abundance of studios and money to create animated movies and other media forms. Despite not having an abundance of animation studios, the South African animation industry has existed for years and has recently caught the attention of many due to the digital age offering more information about alternative career paths and locally produced animations such as Munki and Trunk and Seal Team being recognized internationally. With the global animation industry predicted to be worth $642.5 billion by 2030, it comes as no surprise that more South African youth are pursuing a career in animation and that more companies are exploring it as a medium to advertise to customers.

In 2021, Triggerfish, Africa’s biggest animation studio, partnered with the German-funded Employment for Skills and Development in Africa (E4D) Programme to help introduce 10,000 school leavers to the animation industry while helping 6000 individuals with creating enhanced portfolios and creating 200 jobs over a period of 3 years.

Triggerfish will also be the lead producer on a Disney+ original animated anthology named Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. Their Netflix supported pan-African story artist lab is also an indication of the growth of the South African industry as it will offer 20 story artists a 3-month paid internship, allowing them to learn from some of the biggest names in the international animation industry. Another example of South Africa’s animation industry growing is the studio Mind’s Eye Creative doing work on multiple Netflix shows and an Amazon show that was nominated for 3 Daytime Emmy Awards.

For far too long, Western animators have told African stores and now the tide is shifting. One animator who’s playing a key role in that shift is award winning Lwazi Msipha who studied at the School of Animation and is the brainchild behind the show My Cartoon Friend on Cartoon Network. He also boasts of over 200K followers on TikTok, where he shares animations that contain entertaining characters like Nurse Thandi who poke fun at current affairs and raise awareness about social issues in a relatable way. Nurse Thandi is also a digital influencer who’s recently joined the Millennial Mindset Media team, which means she’ll be helping us bring awareness to our clients’ brands through various social media campaigns.

We are excited to announce that Nurse Thandi has joined the Millennial Mindset Team  as our first animated influencer. We’ve also added animation services onto our roster to help brands promote themselves in an engaging and informative way. Find out more about our animation services here.
